Meet the winners: Mel Nyoko

Interviewed by Kristel Buckley

The Inclusive Books for Children Awards has revealed Democratic Republic of the Congo as the winner of the Baby & Toddler category for 2025.

Published by Barefoot Books as part of their Our World series, this conceptually fresh Own-Voice story with non-fiction elements is a wonderfully vibrant, beautifully illustrated board book introducing toddlers to the rich cultural heritage of people in the DRC.

Authored by Congolese writer and poet Mel Nyoko and illustrated by award-winning British Congolese-Angolan Joelle Avelino, the book reflects the everyday experiences of Congolese children and families — from morning routines to market visits, bathtime bubbles to trips to the zoo. Opportunities for counting are also woven into the narrative, making it both entertaining and educational.

The simple text includes keywords from three different African languages: Lingala, Tshiluba, and Swahili, offering little ones and their adults an immersive, multilingual, shared reading experience that may have long-term benefits for babies’ cognitive development.

Why the IBC Awards matter?

The IBC book awards celebrate the best diverse and inclusive children’s literature published in the UK and the talent behind these books.

Now in their second year, the awards include a special category for early years titles aimed at 1- to 3-year-olds, which is rarely seen in UK book competitions.

By recognising Democratic Republic of the Congo this year, within the current geopolitical climate, the awards highlight the importance of broader global representation in children’s books. This helps young readers see their cultural heritage authentically represented while allowing others to learn about countries beyond their own experience, reducing stereotypical perceptions as they grow."
