My Must-Have Mum

Disabled parents don’t pop up often in picture books, so this joyful story about Jake and his enterprising, upcycling mother (both brown-skinned) is refreshing. A celebration of a mother-son relationship, her collecting and creations and their adventures are the focus, and her disability isn’t mentioned. Some manoeuvres stretch credulity a little, but the normalising of disabled parenthood is welcome!
